John Hope Franklin cast in "Blood Done Signed My Name"

93-year-old civil rights historian is from Durham

http://www.wral.com/news/state/story/2946169/RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - Civil rights historian and North Carolina resident John Hope Franklin will appear in a movie based on a book about the 1970 slaying of black man in Oxford.

The author of "Blood Done Signed My Name," Timothy Tyson, said Tuesday that Franklin recently agreed to appear in the movie, which is being filmed in Shelby and nearby areas.

The 93-year-old Franklin will play the role of an older man who helps a group of men get a mule on a truck to take it from Raleigh to Oxford. Filming is scheduled for June 10 in Statesville.

Franklin lives is Durham and has chronicled civil rights history. He was part of the NAACP Legal Defense Fund team that helped develop the Brown v. Board of Education case, which led to the U.S. Supreme Court decision outlawing racial segregation in public schools.
