Cucalorus and NC Film Office Launch "Filmed in NC" Indie Filmmaker Fund
December 3, 2015
WILMINGTON - Applications open today for the newly launched Filmed in NC Cucalorus Indie Filmmakers Fund. This initiative of the Cucalorus Film Foundation, made possible by support from the NC Film Office, supports the creation of independently produced film and video projects by artists who are permanent residents of North Carolina or who are full-time students at college or universities in North Carolina.
The program will fund projects by emerging and established artists with a proven record for producing singular and original work. Additionally, projects should exhibit potential for generating meaningful community impact and substantial economic activity in North Carolina. Funding is prioritized for female filmmakers and African American and Latino artists.
Cucalorus is excited to be entering the funding side of the creative process, said Cucalorus Executive Director Dan Brawley. Funding emerging filmmakers and low-budget projects is essential to developing a healthy creative eco-system and builds on our continued commitment to supporting the development of bold new works by artists working here in North Carolina.
Application proposals will be accepted from December 3, 2015 until January 5, 2016. Funding ranges from $500 to $3,000 per project. To view a full list of eligibility requirements and submit an application, visit www.cucalorus.org. Applicants will be notified in early February 2016.
Cucalorus was founded in 1994 by the underground filmmaking collective Twinkle Doon. Today, Cucalorus is a multi-disciplinary organization supporting emerging and innovative creative professionals through an annual film festival, a residency program, a micro-cinema, a summer outdoor screening series, and an extensive community engagement program. The annual festival takes place every November, celebrating independent and international film for five days in historic downtown Wilmington, NC. MovieMaker Magazine recently recognized it as "One of the Coolest Film Festivals in the World, 2015." Cucalorus dove into the world of venture capital and entrepreneurship with the Cucalorus CONNECT conference as part of the 2015 film festival. More than 250 films were screened and over 50 CONNECT events took place at venues all over downtown Wilmington, attracting 300+ participating artists and more than 15,000 fans and industry professionals. Cucalorus is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that relies on funds from individuals, businesses, and grants to fund its annual celebration.
